Garmin Venu 3S

Garmin have been leading the charge when it comes to fitness watches, and the Venu 3S is up there with the best of them. It has all of the state-of-the-art features you'd expect from any Garmin, but with the look, feel and useability of an Apple watch.

The Venu 3S features a big 10 day battery life in smartwatch mode and has a relatively swift charging time of 1.5 hours. It's water resistant to 50 metres for swimmers, and tracks pretty much everything - including sleep and naps, steps, calories, energy levels, activity distance, pace and elevation… You get the picture.

More advanced features include stress tracking, wheelchair setup and animated cardio, strength and HIIT workouts that are pre-loaded - effectively like having a personal trainer on your wrist.

Overall the Venu 3S is our watch of choice for all round fitness tracking. For running, it's accurate and quick to pick up GPS, and can automatically upload your runs to Strava. It's sleep tracking is significantly improved from previous models, adding to a more comprehensive and integrated overview of your health.

Fitbit Charge 6

The Fitbit Charge 6 is Fitbit's signature tracker - a really sleek band with a silicon strap that is comfortable to wear and easy to sleep in. At only £139, it’s an accessible price point that isn't as all-powerful as some others on this list - but is still packed with tonnes of features.

It has, for example, 40+ different sports modes for tracking, which include HIIT, skiing and golf as well as the more standard selection of running, walking, biking and swimming. However, the detail around gymwork (counting reps, for example) is missing.

The slightly curved AMOLED screen is bright and vivid, and the battery life of 7 days is handy as you can schedule in a weekly charge. There are a few extra features not seen on most of the watches on this list - including receiving call and text notifications, controlling YouTube music and using Google Pay, all of which are nifty.

The Fitbit Charge 6 might not be the best option for fitness junkies or marathon runners, but it's got enough data for the casual fitness enthusiast and it's a great way to dip your toe in the water without some of the frills of a more expensive model.

Garmin Fenix 7 Pro Sapphire Solar

For adrenaline junkies and fitness professionals, the Fenix 7 Pro from Garmin is cutting edge. It has super in-depth health monitoring and detailed performance metrics, as well as over 80 activities (including sports like surfing and inline skating).

Oh - and the Power Sapphire screen is as tough as old boots.

As expected, it's jam-packed with features that go above and beyond, like endurance score, recovery time, training load and status. The data is insanely detailed for each individual activity too, in case you're interested (for example) in your strokes per minute whilst kayaking.

Many of the activity modes also feature navigation with the preloaded maps, and the Fenix 7 is also preloaded with workout plans which adjust based on use and ability. On top of that you'll have music storage that supports Spotify & Amazon, plus access to Garmin Pay.

The impressive battery life claims to last 18 days in smartwatch mode, or 22 with solar - meaning it's unlikely you'll be out of charge any time soon. During that time, the Garmin Fenix 7 Pro will handle just about anything you can throw at it.

Apple Watch Series 9

Apple Watch Series 9

Although they aren't yet able to rival Garmin in the fitness space, the Apple Watch has come on leaps and bounds since it's first inception and is now a respectable contender at least.

There's a lot to like about the recent Series 9. For starters, I'd argue that Apple are still making the best looking smartwatches on the market, period. They are also incredible usable - with the 9 notably allowing users to answer calls and silence alarms with a "double tap" of the thumb and index finger.

Just like previous iterations, the Apple Watch Series 9 can track your blood oxygen levels, heart rate, temperature, sleep and more. You can track a good range of activities from weight training to HIIT to yoga to jogging.

However, (also like previous iterations) Apple are still lagging behind the crowd when it comes to battery life. You'll get up to 18 hours from the charge time of 1hr 15m which pales toward insignificance when compared with, say, the Garmin Venu or Fenix.

Wahoo ELEMNT Rival

Wahoo ELEMNT Rival

It's a decent sports watch in it's own right, but the Wahoo Elemnt Rival comes into it's own for triathlon users. It's quite stripped back, and doesn't have as diverse a range of activities pre-loaded as the others on this list - but for running, cycling and swimming it's a bargain.

It's timeless transition feature is the slam dunk, alerting you when it's time to finish your swim and giving you your T1 time when you jump on the bike (as well as continuing to time you, of course).

Battery life is 14 days in watch mode (24 in GPS mode) and the display is simple and easy to read. Overall the ELEMNT Rival is purposefully simplified and attractively priced. It's brass tacks only, but if that's what you're looking for you could certainly do worse.
